Recycling Your Personal Electronics
WasteNot now offers a recycling bag for your personal electronics.
Each year thousands of phones, laptops, and other electronics are thrown away, even though many can still be reused or recycled for their parts. When electronics end up in a landfills, their valuable components get wasted and can create harmful environmental impacts (ERI, 2019). Discarded electronics account for an estimated 70% of the heavy metals found in U.S. landfills (EPA, 2004).
When electronics get recycled with WasteNot, any personal data is securely wiped and working devices may be refurbished and reused. The remaining electronics are carefully taken apart and sorted so their materials can be safely recycled, sold, and repurposed into new technology (ERI, 2019). Any hazardous elements like lead, mercury, and cadmium are carefully managed and disposed of in compliance with strict environmental regulations (ERI, 2019). Currently only around 17.4% of e-waste is properly recycled around the world (The Roundup, 2026).
How to Recycle your Personal Electronics
To help prevent personal electronics from ending up in landfills, WasteNot is now offering a Personal Electronics Recycling bag that is available to our residential members. We work with local electronic recycling partners that safely recycle your electronics.
Residential members can place an order for a Personal Electronics recycling bag for $10 on the WasteNot Shop. Members will then receive the bag with instructions on what is accepted on their next regular compost service day.

Before placing your mailer out for collection, make sure it is sealed and not overfilled. If your collection bag is torn or overfilled, it cannot be collected. By recycling your old electronics, you can help recover valuable materials and keep more waste out of landfills.
