Waste from cords and cables is a growing issue in the United States. Americans discard roughly 6 to 7 million tons of electronics annually (CR, 2026). Within those millions of tons, thousands of pounds of valuable materials from cords, like copper and aluminum, are landfilled when they could be recycled and reused. 

While standard electronics like Phones, computers, and TV’s are seen by most people as something that needs to be recycled,. cords & cables are often classified as “Invisible” e-Waste - a product with valuable materials that is often disregarded as regular trash (WeeeForum, 2023).

How to Recycle your Cords & Cables

To help keep cords and cables out of our landfills, WasteNot is now offering a new recycling bag for our residential members: Cords & Cables Collection. We work with local recycling partners that safely recycle your cords and cables. The cords are stripped for recyclable metals so their individual components can get a second life.

Residential Members can order a Cords & Cables recycling bag for $10. The compostable collection bag will be delivered inside the member’s 5-gal bucket on the service date immediately following the order.

Before placing your mailer out for collection, make sure it is sealed and not overfilled. If your collection bag is torn or overfilled it cannot be collected.

By recycling your old cords and cables, you can clear out your collection of unused wires and cables while helping recover valuable materials and keep more waste out of landfills. With WasteNot’s new Cords & Cables Collection, those old cables can have a second life instead of ending up in the trash.
