How To Compost In McHenry County

  • Sign Up

    Sign up here to join the McHenry County compost drop-off network and choose your site. You will receive an email and invite to your WasteNot account after signing up.

    Your participation will help to divert compostable waste from landfills.

  • Get Access

    Once you sign up, you can bring your compostables to the drop-off point you choose. Empty your waste at the site and our team will collect and compost the material.

  • Create Impact

    Lower your environmental footprint by composting with WasteNot. Material that WasteNot collects from drop-off sites will be turned into a nutrient rich soil amendment known as finished compost to improve local soil health.

What can i compost with wastenot?

Here’s everything you need to know about what can be composted in McHenry County.

  • If it has ever been alive, you can compost it! All food scraps (even meat and bones!) can be safely composted in your WasteNot receptacle of choice.

  • Pizza boxes, paper towels, and any 100% paper products are compostable with WasteNot.

  • Look for “certified compostable” when looking to see if your plastic products can be composted. Avoid composting products that advertise as “biodegradable” or “plant-based” without explicit mention of compostable certification.

  • If you are interested in being a host site for the WasteNot Compost Drop-Off Network, please complete this form and our team will be in touch.

  • To get unlimited access to the drop off location, it costs $10/month.

  • After you sign up, WasteNot will email you with instructions on how to access the drop-off location of your choosing.

  • Composting helps on an individual, community, and global level! It reduces odors and organic waste in your home, and reduces the amount of food being sent to landfills. On a global level, this reduces greenhouse gas emissions from landfills. Composting is a simple habit that creates a sustainable way of life while protecting the environment.   • Generally speaking, “if it grows, it goes!” Anything once living can be composted. At WasteNot, we are able to accept a wide variety of items due to being on the industrial level. To view what’s compostable with WasteNot, check out our guide here.

  • Just a few things! Pet droppings, excessive liquids, plastics (including wrappers), metals, and glass can’t be composted.

  • To cancel your account and lose access to the drop off site, please complete our cancellation form on this page.
